John Joseph Jones was born in London, England about 1893 to Edward Jones and Mary Ann Coughlin.  When he enlisted in Cairns, his age was 21 years 3 months, occupation a Labourer and next of kin his father Edward Jones, 23 Sussex Rd, Plaistow, England.  His height was  5 feet 6 inches, weighed 183 pounds with a fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.  He gave his religion as Roman Catholic.

He embarked from Brisbane on 29 June 1915 on the HMAS Aeneas for Gallipoli.  On 5 August 1916 he was reported missing which was shortly changed to ‘killed in action” after the Court of Enquiry.

A Private Walter George Norrington who had served with John Jones in both Gallipoli and Egypt then went to the Somme together made enquiries for Private Jones’ parents address so he could write to them.

John Joseph Jones is remembered on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Picardie, France.
