George Robert DALZIEL

George Robert Dalziel was born on the 5 January 1895 in Steigletz, Victoria, to William James Dalziel and Mary Ellen Kay.  William James and Mary Kay married in 1888 and lived in Queensland prior to moving to Victoria.  After George Robert’s father died on the 18 September 1905, the family moved back to Queensland.  

George Robert was one of eight children,  William, born 1888 Qld, Mary Ellen, 1890 born Qld, Thomas Edward, 1892 born Qld, then Samuel John, 1898 born Vic, Robert, born 1901 Vic, James, 1901 Vic, Frank, 28 October 1903 Vic and then George Robert in 1905.  

At the time of George Robert’s enlistment he was residing in Cairns, he gave his age as 21 years 1 month and his next of kin as his mother, Mrs. Mary Ellen Dalziel of Water St., Cairns.  His occupation was a Carter.  He was 5 feet 9 inches in height, weighed 150 pounds, had dark complexion, blue eyes and dark brown hair.  He gave his religion as Church of England.  

George Robert was wounded in action on the 11 June 1917 in France and on the 20th September 1917 during an advance on Glencourse Wood. For his bravery at Glencourse Wood he was awarded the Military Medal. The citation reads “At Hooge France 10/9/17 during the advance on Glencourse Wood Pte Dalzeil rendered invaluable assistance as a stretcher bearer. He tended and assisted wounded in their evacuation at all time showing utter disregard of self. Later during the consolidation of our position he was at all time conspicuous and his efforts cannot be too highly praised.” [NAA: B2455]  

George Robert Dalziel was killed in action in Belgium 27 March 1918. He was buried in the Oxford Road Cemetery.
