Evan HOLMES

Evan Holmes was born on the 27 June 1897 in Wales to Josiah Holmes and Mary Jones, There were 9 children in his family, seven were born in Wales and two in Queensland. William 1894, Evan 1897, George Henry 1896, David Dan (Daniel) 1898, Josiah 1900, Mary Elizabeth 1908, Thomas Llewellyn 1909, Queenie Emily born 1922 Atherton and Robert Stanley born Cairns 1912,

In 1901 the Holmes family were residing at Llanfihangel Cardiganshire, Wales and the surname was recorded as Homes.

The family decided to immigrate to Australia and they arrived in October 1910. Evan’s brothers William, George Henry and David Daniel enlisted in the Australian Army. William, after his enlistment, was rejected on medical grounds, George Henry was killed in action 18 October 1917 and David Daniel returned home.

Evans father Josiah died 10 January 1941.

On his enlistment Evan was residing in Cairns, his age was 18 years 2 months, his occupation was a bridge carpenter.  His next of kin was his father Josiah Holmes of Bungalow, Cairns. His height was 5 feet 8 inches, weight 14 pounds, with ruddy complexion, brownish eyes and light brown hair. He gave his religion as Church of England.

Evan Holmes died of wounds received at Gallipoli Peninsula on the 13 October 1915. He is buried in the 7th Field Ambulance Cemetery, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province.
