Percival John HANNEYSEE

Percival John Hanneysee was born 24 November 1899 to William John Hanneysee and Isabella Frances Byrne and one of five children.  Clement Leslie born 1901, Bluebell 1906, Melba Victoria 1902 and William Thomas born in 1898 and died 1898.  William Thomas was buried in the McLeod Street Pioneer Cemetery.

Percival’s father, William John, was a licensed victualler and from 1903 to 1912 the family lived on the corner of Spence and Bunda Streets Cairns.  From here they moved to Dutton Street.

In 1901 Percival’s mother was a victim of the bubonic plague and survived.

Percival John’s father died in 1932 and his mother Isabella in 1945.

At the time of his enlistment in Cairns there were conflicting ages given.  On the Attestation Paper he gave his age as 24 and year of birth as 1893, but on the ‘Description’ page his age is 18 years 10 months.  His occupation was a Labourer and his next of kin was his father William John Hanneysee, Cairns.  His height was 5 feet 9 inches, weight 140 pounds with a fair complexion, grey eyes and dark brown hair.  His religion was Roman Catholic.

Percival John also stated that he had been 5 years in the Cadet Corp and 8 months in the Citizens Forces.

On the 10 October 1917 he organized that four shillings per day be deducted from his pay and paid to his mother Isabella Frances Hanneysee of Dutton Street Cairns.

Percival John Hanneysee was killed in action on the 4 July 1918 and was buried in the Crucifix Corner British Cemetery, one mile south east of Villers Brettoneux
