Donald John Grant was born in Normanton on the 23 October 1890 to Alexander George Grant and Mary Bell. He was one of 4 children, William born 1892, Walter in 1894 and Ellen Jane in 1896.

On his enlistment in Brisbane, Donald was 24 years old, his occupation a Labourer and his next of kin was his mother Mrs. Mary Grant, Gordonvale, via Cairns. His height was 5 feet 6 inches, weighed 150 pounds with blonde complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. He gave his religion as Presbyterian.

Donald John Grant died from Arsenical Dermatitis in the 3rd Australian General Hospital, Abbassia on the 23 June 1916. He was buried in the English Protestant Cemetery in Cairo.
