Charles Leo Maher was born 23 July 1894 in Irvinebank to James Maher and Maria McDonald. His father James died in 1905 and his mother Maria in 1908. Charles then lived with his Aunt, Eliza Healy.
Maher Street Mareeba was named after Charles Leo Maher.
On his enlistment in Cairns, he was 20 years 5 months, his occupation a Locomotive Fireman, his next of kin was his sister, Miss Maggie Maher, Herberton North Queensland. His height was 5 feet 8 ½ inches, weighed 144 pounds with dark complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. His religion was Roman Catholic.
Charles Leo Maher was killed in action in Gallipoli 25 April 1915 and was buried at Quinn’s Post Cemetery, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey
