Cubert Edward Marett was born c1896 and was fostered by Mrs Elizabeth Marett (nee McCrudden). Cubert was only 3 days old when Elizabeth Marett, who was aged about 51 years, took over his care. Cubert’s mother was known as Mrs Minnie Jessup as well as Mrs Hurley. Although one record showed that he was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Marett, they had divorced in 1886 and Elizabeth Marett appeared to be on her own in caring for Cubert.
Elizabeth Marett died 20 February 1923 aged 78. Mary Ann (Minnie) Jessup died November 1924.
At the time of his enlistment he was aged 19 years 1 month and he gave his next of kin as his foster mother, Mrs. E. Marrett of Stratford Railway Station. His occupation was a Butcher and he had completed 4 years apprenticeship with Killpatricks of Cairns. His height was 5 feet 9 inches, weighed 154 pounds with fair complexion, brown eyes and black hair. He gave his religion as Roman Catholic.
Cubert Edward Marett was killed in action on the 5 August 1916 and buried in Courcelette British Cemetery, Picardie, France.
