Francis STOREY

Francis Storey was born in New Zealand to William Storey and Maria Dynes, the eldest of 4 children, Mabel born 1884, Sarah Elizabeth 1887 and Ethel Maria 1888.

In 1916 Francis was a farmer in Malanda, Queensland and named Mr. Stanley Arthur Davies, also a farmer in Malanda, as the executor of his will.

On his enlistment in Cairns, his age was 35, occupation a farmer, next of kin his mother Mrs Maria Storey, Waiterimu, Waikato, Auckland, New Zealand. His height was 6 feet, weighed 173 pounds with dark complexion, grey eyes with brown hair. His religion was Church of England.

Prior to his service in the 41st Battalion, Francis served in the Far North Queensland Kennedy Regiment, known as the Dirty 500.  Members of the Dirty 500, including Francis, landed on Thursday Island on 16 August 1914 from the troopship “Kanowna”, to take part in the capture of German New Guinea. An incident on board the “Kanowna” involving the firemen forced the immediate return of the troops to Townsville on 18 August 1914; Francis was discharged the same day.

On the 2nd August 1917 Francis Storey was reported missing in France, then  killed in action 5 August 1917 in Belgium. He is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium.
