Walter was born 7 July 1918 to  William Alfred Knight and Lottie (Williams) Elliott, he was one of three children. 

Walter married Vera May Morrissey in 1940 and had two daughters.

In the 1943 electoral roll he and his wife were listed at Gold Street, South Fremantle and his occupation was a railway employee.

Walter died from severe burns received on an R.A.A.F. refueling barge.
