John was born 21 March 1914 to John and Margaret May (Smith) Thompson in Guildford, Victoria, he had 6 siblings, Elizabeth May born 1890, Charles Henry 1897, Elsie Evelyn 1902, William John 1905, Alexander Campbell 1906, John Martin 1907 and Islay Mary born 1911.

He enlisted at Royal Park, Victoria on the 22 July 1941 and gave his next of kin as his father John Thompson.
