Matthew’s parents were James John Frederick and Annie (Gray) Buckley, born 18 January 1922 and was one of ten children. Allan John, Nancy May, James Alexander, Samuel George, Christopher Edward, Margaret, Barbara Agnes, Isabella Alice and Irene.

His mother, Annie Buckley, was his next of kin on his army records.

Australian War Memorial, War Diary entry for 3 October 1944, states “ Pte. Buckley, M. J. QX45811 accidentally killed” no further details were provided. Entry for 4 October 1944 states “Burial of Pte Buckley M.J. at Cairns Cemetery”.  At that time his Company was in Cairns.

Matthew John Buckley’s name is on the Balmoral, Brisbane, Roll of Honour board and also located at panel 74 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial
