Jerome was born  26 December 1910 in Glencoe South Australia to Jerome Stanton and Emily Victoria (Sutton) Hayes.  He enlisted in Adelaide and gave his wife Edna as his next of kin.

Corporal Hayes fought in the desert campaigns and Tobruk.  He was killed when the motor cycle he was riding collided with a car at East Innisfail.

Jerome Sutton Hayes’s name is on the Adelaide Roll of Honour board and also located at panel 93 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial.
