Allan James Irwin was born in Hobart, Tasmania, on the 26 February 1924 to Alfred James and Minna Vera (Fletcher) Irwin, the only son. He had three sisters, Betty, Rita and Julie.

He enlisted at Mona Vale, Tasmania and his next of kin was his father, Alfred.

Gunner Alfred James Irwin died from injuries.

Allan James Irwin’s name is on the Glenorchy Roll of Honour and is also located at panel 18 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial.
