James Leslie was born 23 April 1913 in Mackay Queensland to Edmund Sheldrake Johnson and Eileen Isobel (Fern) Johnson, his known siblings are Edmund Alfred born 1909, Charles Oliver 1911, Clare Ellen 1914, Henry Rueben 1918 and two other sisters.

He enlisted in Mackay and gave his father Edmund as his next of kin and his occupation as a labourer and cane cutter.

His death is recorded as accidental, while engaged in jungle training and probably drowning while unconscious.

James Leslie Johnson’s name is on Alexandra Roll of Honour board and also located at panel 87 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial.
