Gordon Thomson was born 8 July 1920, in Lancashire England to Robert and Marjeanetta (Riddle) Thomson. On his enlistment his occupation was a salesman, but later shown as a mechanic and driver, next of kin was his wife Emily Thomson, c/- Mr Robert Thomson, Shaw House, Flixton, Lancashire, England. His age was 20 years 1 month, height 5 feet 10 inches with fair complexion, brown eyes and auburn hair. His religion was Church of England.
Gordon had joined the RAAF Reserve at the age of 19 years 9 months.
He was a Wireless Operator Air Gunner and was awarded the DFM (Distinguished Flying Medal) for exceptional valour, courage or devotion to duty whilst flying in active operations against the enemy.
Gordon was also the team captain of his Unit Soccer Team.
His wife Emily Amelia Margot Thomson was living at Clarkefield, Victoria at the time of his death and his records also show that he had twins, born in 1944.
Flying Officer Thomson was on board a Hudson Aircraft, travelling from Archerfield, Brisbane, to Cairns and was killed when it crashed into the sea, near Cairns. Also killed were Major-General Vasey, CB, CBE, DSO, Major-General R M Downes CMG, VC, MD, Lieutenant-Colonel G A Bertram, Flight Lieutenant J W Newell, Flying Officer D J Bassett, Flying Officer F B Frieze, Corporal R L James and LAC J D Moore.
Gordon Thomson’s name is on St Kilda Roll of Honour board and also located at panel 112 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial.
