Bombardier Walter Jamieson

Walter Jamieson was born 28 December 1887 in Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland, the youngest of seven children of Alexander & Mary Jamieson.

He had been working as a patternmaker for 6 years before leaving his employment at the Rosyth Dockyard in March 1914.  He arrived in Mareeba where his uncle, also Walter Jamieson, had a large sawmilling business.  His uncle died in September 1915 and shortly after, young Walter enlisted in the AIF.

He was 29 years 11 months of age, 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighed 149 pounds.  He was Presbyterian and named his father as next of kin.

He embarked from Sydney on HMAT Argyllshire on 11 May 1916 arriving in Plymouth, England on 10 July.

After spending several days in hospital sick, he embarked from Southampton for France where he was taken on strength and posted to 110th Battery.  He spent a month sick in hospital.  While there he was charged and reprimanded for being in a café during prohibited hours.  He returned to his unit on 24 August 1917 and transferred to 10th FAB the next day.

He was wounded in action on 21 October 1917 and moved to the 2nd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station where he died of his wounds.

He was buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Lijssenthoek, Flanders, Belgium.
