Michael James FOX

Michael James Fox was born on the 17 November 1891 at Herberton, Queensland to Matthew Fox and Marian McKeegan.  Michael was the second child and one of eight children.  The first child was John Lindale born 1890, then Michael born 1891, Kathleen Berbina 1893, Patrick 1895, Marian Elizabeth 1897, Daniel O’Mahony 1899, Owen William 1901 and Marjorie Amelia in 1904.

The year before Michael enlisted, according to the Electoral Roll for Atherton, he was a labourer living at Kaiiri with his father Matthew who was a miner.  His father was an old Northern identity in the mining industry.

Michael’s father Matthew died in 1924 and his mother Marion died in 1940.

At the time of Michael’s enlistment he was living in Herberton.  He gave his age as 23 years 4 months and his occupation as a Labourer.  Michael was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and weighed 140 pounds.  He had blue eyes, black hair and a fair complexion.

Michael was killed in action in France on the 12 April 1917, as described in this statement from a Corporal Atherton.  He was buried in the Queant Road Cemetery, Nord Pas de Calais, France.
