Herbert Peter Gallagher was born 10 January 1897 in Junda Queensland, to Peter Henry Gallagher and Kate Elizabeth Bailey. He was one of eight children. His sister Agnes Rose was born 1891, Kate Elizabeth 1893, John Patrick 1895, then Maria Mary born 4 October 1898, George Ernest on the 18 February 1901, and Thora Maria in 1915. A death was found for a brother William Henry in 1971 but a birth record was not located.</p>
From 1913 to 1916, according to the electoral rolls, Herbert Peters’ family was living at Mt Surprise, where his father Peter Henry was a storekeeper. The family then moved to Bowen, Queensland, where his brother, John Patrick, died tragically in 1924.
Herbert’s father Peter Henry Gallagher died 8 November 1944, and his mother Katherine (Kate) Elizabeth died in 1950.
Herbert Peter was residing in Cairns at the time of his enlistment and gave his age as 19 years 8 months and his next of kin as his father, Peter Gallagher of Mt Surprise, North Queensland. This address was crossed out and changed to “Glen Waverley” Don River, Bowen, Queensland. His height was 5 feet 10 ½ inches, he weighed 161 pounds with dark complexion, blue eyes and black hair. His occupation was a miner and his religion, Roman Catholic.
Herbert Peter was wounded 26 September 1917 and died at No 3 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station in Belgium on the 26 September 1917 from wounds received. He is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Lijssenthoek, Flanders, Belgium.
