John David HUME

John David Mcleich Hume was born 6 November 1894, in Mount Morgan, the eldest of four children of John Hume and his wife Louisa (formerly Barclay). He had two younger sisters, Ivy May (1897) and Amelia Elizabeth (1899) and a younger brother, William Stanley (1901).

On his enlistment John was 22 years 1 month, occupation a Cleaner in the Railways and nominated his father, John Hume, Mt Morgan, as his next of kin. He was 5 feet 11 inches in height; weighed 168 pounds with dark complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He was Presbyterian. John also spent 6 months in Port Curtis Infantry but then left the district.

He embarked on the HMAT Borda from Sydney on 5 June 1916 and arrived in Southampton England on 23 July 1916.  While in England he was promoted to Lance Corporal and proceeded to France on 26 November 1916. He was wounded in action on 30 January 1917 and transferred to the 1st Canadian Casualty Clearing Station.

John David Hume died there of his wounds on 1 February 1917 and is buried in the Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension (Nord), Lille, Nord Pas de Calais, France.
