William Jarman was born 18 July 1890 at Irvinebank Qld the eldest of 5 children of Edward and Jane Jarman (nee Lewis), Maurice Edward (1893), Herbert (1895), James Lewis (1897-1899) and Frances (1900).
The three Jarman brothers enlisted, the youngest, Herbert was first in January 1915, followed by William in April that year, then by Maurice in August 1915. Herbert and Maurice returned to Australia in August 1916 and March 1919 respectively.
William enlisted in Cairns on 27 April 1915, his age was 24 years 10 months, occupation a Bullock Driver and next of kin, his mother Mrs E Jarman, “Atherton” Kerrs Rad, Sydney. His height was 5 feet 10 inches, weighed 154 pounds with a fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He was Presbyterian.
He embarked from Brisbane on 24 May 1915 aboard HMAT Ascanius and saw service in Egypt before arriving at Marseilles France in June 1916. He was admitted to hospital several times with bronchitis. He was promoted from Driver to Corporal in May 1916 and to Sergeant in May 1918.
William Jarman was killed in action on 4 July 1918 and is buried at Franvillers Communal Cemetery Extension, Franvillers, Picardie, France.
