Matthew MILLER

Matthew was the son of John Alexander Miller and Frances Harriet Smith, born in Townsville on the 8 October 1890. He was the eldest of five children, Frances Hannah born 1894, John Alexander 1896, Dorothy Catherine 1898 and May born 1890 who died in 1900.

Matthew’s mother Frances Harriet remarried in 1915 to George H. Roberts Chisnall and they had 5 children, George Roberts Chisnall born 1901, Benjamin 1903, Joseph William 1905, Elizabeth Frances 1907 and Alfred Leslie 1910. Frances Harriet married again to William John Kemp and died in 1954.

Matthew married Josephine Martin in 1914 and had one son Darcy Matthew born 1914.

At the time of his enlistment he was residing in Cairns, aged 25 years 9 months and his next of kin was his wife, Mrs Josephine Miller, Wolfram Camp, this was changed to c/- Mrs Martin, Day Dawn Crossing, Charters Towers. His height was 5 feet 7 inches, weighed 146 pounds with dark complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. His religion was Roman Catholic.

During his time overseas he was debited 1/2d on the 13 March 1917 for the loss of kit, one pair of worsted socks.

Matthew Miller was killed in action in Belgium on the 4 October 1917 and was buried in the Bedford House Cemetery.
