John Thomas Sewell was born c1888 in Lincolnshire, England. He married Mary Evans, formerly Gladstone, who already had 4 children, on the 26 November 1904. John and Mary had one child born 1907 who did not survive.
In 1903 John was living in Mossman and by 1909 had moved to Hambledon, where he remained.
On his enlistment in Townsville, his age was 35 years 10 months, occupation a labourer and next of kin, his brother, Mr H Sewell, Bunda Street, Cairns. His height was 5 feet 5 1/2 inches, weighed 108.9 pounds with a darkish complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. He gave his religion as Church of England.
John Thomas Sewell embarked on the HMAT Berrima A35 on the 22 December 1914 and was killed in action at Dardanelles, Gallipoli Peninsula on the 27 April 1915. His resting place could not be located. He is remembered on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
