Frederick Vivian Ernest TOLL

Frederick was born Frederick Vivian Ernest Edward Toll on the 7 July 1895 to Frederick William Toll and Emma Bone. He had a sister Stella Maud born c 1898.  His mother Emma died in 1901. His father became Lieutenant Colonel Toll of the 31^st Battalion, 8^th Infantry Brigade.

On his enlistment in Cairns, Frederick was 19 years 6 months of age, his occupation was a clerk and next of kin his father F. W. Toll in active service Tropical Force and mother, Mrs Toll of Charters Towers. He height was 5 feet 6 inches, weighed 119 pounds with sallow complexion, dark brown eyes and black hair. He gave his religion as Church of England.

Frederick also served in the 2^nd Far North Kennedy Regiment as a Sergeant, known as the Dirty 500. Members of the Dirty 500, including Frederick, landed on Thursday Island on 16 August 1914 from the troopship “Kanowna”, to take part in the capture of German New Guinea. An incident on board the “Kanowna” involving the firemen forced the immediate return of the troops to Townsville on 18 August 1914.

It was recorded that he was wounded on the 8 August 1915, then missing on the same date, then changed to Killed in Action.

Frederick Vivian Toll was declared killed in action in the Gallipoli Peninsula on the 8^th August 1915 after a Court of enquiry that was held at Serapeum on the 6^th, 8^th and 23^rd April 1916.  There is no known grave but he is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial (Panel 50), Gallipoli, Turkey.
